Why Is My Refrigerator Leaking Water?

Finding a puddle under or behind your refrigerator is a common surprise, and the good news is that the cause is often something simple. The tricky part is that a small, steady drip can slip under the unit and into the flooring long before you spot it. Below are the usual reasons a fridge leaks, how to check each one, and the signs that water has already reached places you cannot see.

Common Causes

Most refrigerator leaks trace back to one of these issues:

• A blocked defrost drain. This is the most frequent cause. Food particles or ice can clog the small drain that carries melt water away, sending it onto the floor instead.
• A clogged or frozen water supply line. The line feeding the icemaker and dispenser can kink, crack, or freeze, leaking near the back of the unit.
• A worn door seal. If the gasket no longer seals tightly, warm air sneaks in, creates condensation, and drips down.
• An unlevel refrigerator. If the unit tilts the wrong way, internal drainage can back up and overflow.

How to Check

You can safely investigate most of these yourself before calling anyone.

1. Unplug the fridge or pull it out gently, and look for the source of the water at the back and underneath.
2. Inspect the water supply line for cracks, kinks, or ice, and check the shutoff valve behind the unit.
3. Locate the defrost drain inside the freeze compartment and flush it with warm water to clear a clog.
4. Run a hand along the door gasket to feel for gaps, and clean or replace it if it is torn or stiff.
5. Use a level on top and adjust the front feet so the unit sits correctly.

When the Floor Is Already Damaged

The bigger worry with a slow fridge leak is what it does out of sight. Water that seeps under the unit can soak into wood, laminate, or the subfloor beneath your kitchen. Watch for warping or soft spots in the flooring, discoloration, a lingering musty odor, or edges that lift near the fridge.
