How to Safely Thaw Frozen Pipes

A cold snap can catch Southern California homeowners off guard, and frozen pipes are one of the results. A frozen line is more than an inconvenience, because the ice inside builds pressure that can split the pipe. Thawing it the right way protects your plumbing, while a careless approach can turn a minor problem into a flood. Here is how to handle it safely.

Signs a Pipe Is Frozen

The sooner you catch a freeze, the better your chances of avoiding a burst. Look for these clues:

• Little or no water comes out when you open a faucet.
• Visible frost or ice on an exposed pipe.
• A bulge or unusual bend in a line.
• Pipes that feel extremely cold to the touch in unheated areas.

Frozen lines most often show up in garages, crawl spaces, attics, exterior walls, and under cabinets on outside walls.

How to Thaw It Safely

Once you have located the frozen section, work slowly and gently. Rushing the process is where damage happens.

• Open the affected faucet first. As the ice melts, running water helps clear the blockage and relieves pressure.
• Apply gentle heat starting near the faucet and working back toward the frozen area. This lets melting water escape rather than getting trapped behind the ice.
• Use a safe heat source such as a hair dryer, warm towels, a heating pad wrapped around the pipe, or a portable space heater kept a safe distance away.
• Keep applying heat until full water pressure returns.

Never use an open flame, a blowtorch, or any propane or kerosene heater on a pipe. These are serious fire hazards and can damage the pipe, and they have no place in this job.

When a Pipe Has Already Burst

Sometimes the freeze wins before you can thaw it. If you find water spraying or pooling, act quickly.

• Shut off your main water valve right away to stop the flow.
• Keep the faucet open to drain the line.
• Move belongings out of the water and soak up what you safely can.
• Stay away from standing water near outlets, wiring, or appliances.
